I can’t compete with such perfection, but here’s me anyway:

Me, another human, wearing a black tshirt with my icon's swirly pi image on it over a stripey long sleeve tshirt. My hands frame the shirt in an attempt to match the icon box

when i first started using tumblr, every morning i would keep scrolling the dashboard until i reached the last post i saw from the night before

Wait, you don’t do this?

I do this. I don’t want to miss things. They could be important!

Things I Won't Work With → pipeline.corante.com

Scary and fascinating posts about toxic substances on a chemistry blog.

“It turns out that brutal treatments like, say, touching [titanium tetraazide] with a spatula, or cooling down a vial of it in liquid nitrogen - you know, rough handling - make it detonate violently. I think that staring hard at it is OK, though… [with] goggles, blast shield, face shield, leather suit (!) and ear plugs. “

…

“[Ozonides] tend to have a lot of electron density on them, and bonding between them is a careful, arm’s-length affair, sort of like porcupines mating. “

…

“You can… distill out the perchloric anhydride (dichlorine heptoxide) if you have no sense whatsoever. It’s a liquid with a boiling point of around 80 C, and I’d like to shake the hand of whoever determined that property, assuming he has one left.”

My chemistry knowledge is almost nil (college 101 courses are way in the past), but this is still a pretty friendly read. Cool stuff.

This is really great.

Not that it’s what you’d call a perfect compound in that regard - despite a lot of effort, it’s still not quite ready to be hauled around in trucks. There’s a recent report of a method to make a more stable form of it, by mixing it with TNT. Yes, this is an example of something that becomes less explosive as a one-to-one cocrystal with TNT. Although, as the authors point out, if you heat those crystals up the two components separate out, and you’re left with crystals of pure CL-20 soaking in liquid TNT, a situation that will heighten your awareness of the fleeting nature of life.

Why klutzes like me should never go into chemistry.

Aura And One Almost Human Nancy Boy: Unknown Homestuck Art is open for business! → 1nvadergir.tumblr.com

ludicrousbox:

unknownhomestuckart:

UHA is an art blog for the underdogs of the Homestuck fandom. It’s for the artists that spend hours upon hours working on their fanart, only to have it receive a disappointing amount of notes once it’s been posted. While it’s true that not everyone…

I thought “Eh, I’m popular enough for my purposes, but I wonder what their standards are.” A hundred notes a week? I’m genuinely happy and surprised if I get 15 notes ever, and I think my art is ok. Not that I’ve drawn much Homestuck art recently anyway.

Sometimes I feel like I must be doing tumblr wrong, since I get way more favourites+comments on DeviantArt, though still not a hundred a week per picture (which is good, I would find that overwhelming, it’s hard enough keeping up with comments as is)

Chrome Extension for people adversely affected by GIFs

ouyangdan:uminoko:

Lifehacker recommended a Google Chrome extension that “pauses” gifs.  So, all the gifs on your dash turn into still pics until you click on them.  A bit of warning:  if you un-pause, you can’t re-pause, unless you refresh.  Otherwise, it seems to be working really well!

I just installed it and it works exactly like she said.

You can’t re-pause, but it does stop them until you click.

THIS IS A GORGEOUS THING.

i cannot stop laughing because i was just talking today about how australia has only won 9 medals ever in our history of competing in the winter olympics and my dad just informed me that one of the medals was because in one skating competition all of the other competitors fell over right before the finish line so the australian who was coming last ended up winning \m/

one of the best things ever go watch it

No it was really the best speed skating event ever, I laughed for years

dying of laffs

A true Aussie hero!

I usually have no interest in the Olympics, but happened to turn on the tv JUST AS THIS HAPPENED. Every other sport event I have watched since has been a disappointment.

Conceivably, if the book had not reached the African-American community of readers, if such a category still exists, perhaps there might be some backlash

so apparently save the pearls author, victoria foyt, is unsure if black kids actually read.

Actually I think what she’s implying is that there are African-Americans who read, it’s just that they no longer form a community of “African-American readers”. Because we have Moved Beyond Race and racial identifiers into a post-racial world of colourblind harmony, where the only people who notice race let alone form POC support groups or complain about possible racist subtext to things are old people who haven’t realised that the World has Changed.

(I’m not saying that this is any better, mind you)

You don’t need to be in school to improve your education. Check out Coursera!

One of the biggest issues that I continue to see pop up for people, especially within the young adult generation[s], is the problem of being at a loss for readily available, and seemingly ‘affordable’ educational sources, information, and courses. I recently reblogged a post with a brilliant list of 500 FREE online courses from top universities, which was pretty popular. Then I received a suggestion from a lovely follower of mine to check out Courseera, as I might be interested. So, in addition to the previous online free courses post, I present you with yet another amazing and FREE resource for personal mind expansion. Courseera offers dozens of free online courses from various universities such as Princeton, Stanford, University of Michigan, and University of Pennsylvania.

Below you can view the different types of courses offered on this useful site:

  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Healthcare, Medicine, and Biology
  • Society, Networks, and Information
  • Computer Science
  • Economics, Finance, and Business
  • Humanities and Social Sciences

Knowledge is power. Educate yourself, explore, and expand!

UPDATE: Within the last few weeks 12 World-Class Universities [new to Coursera]  have added more than 100 courses to be available for FREE on Coursera, in addition to the already spectacular selection!

Below is a list of the newly accessible Universities and the courses they each provide:

  • California Institute of Technology
  • Duke University
  • Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne
  • Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Johns Hopkins University
  • Princeton University
  • Rice University
  • Stanford University
  • University of California, San Francisco
  • University of Edinburgh
  • University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • University of Michigan
  • University of Pennsylvania
  • University of Toronto
  • University of Virginia
  • University of Washington

You can also view a list of all courses available here. Enjoy & keep expanding!!

I ended up registering for World Music, because reading the Sci-Fi/Fantasy course description reminded me how much I hate literature classes and how they destroy my ability to actually appreciate literature. But these courses look LEGIT and I’m so excited to start mine.

Taking Intro to Sustainability!

I’m on week two of Quantum Computation, it’s fun if challenging since it’s been so long since I studied anything and I have cognitive issues now. People from all over the world, which is cool, though most have at least an undergraduate degree in science and I can see it being difficult for anyone without a fairly solid grasp of the prerequisites.

Very curious to see how they monetise it. Apparently the plan is to offer premium services for a fee. Tutoring maybe? There’d definitely be takers.

Now that I have mastered the art of guinea pigs, I will pass my gift onto future generations.

Well, kind of. I’ve been drawing guinea pigs since I was 9. It was when I got my first guinea pig, Kitty. Slowly I observed and taught myself what guinea pigs really look like, as with everything else.

I did this in the style of the old “Draw 50” books. I would always check drawing books out of the school library, but those never had any guinea pigs.

Drawing tutorials are too hard to describe in words, but I am reblogging this anyway because it is cute and relevant to certain people’s interests :D
