What’s Kaiji about??
OH MAN how do I explain Kaiji
it’s about EXTREME GAMBLING
like, life-or-death rocks paper scissors for millions of yen
It’s set in Japan during the…
(If you do end up watching and liking the series, I would recommend the manga Gambling Emperor Legend Zero, which is by the same mangaka, Fukumoto Nobuyuki, but instead of his usual seinen it’s his attempt at a shounen. Meaning instead of EXTREME MAH JONG or EXTREME PACHINKO, you get…
EXTREME MATH
seriously the characters have to figure out the missing angle of the isosceles triangle OR DIE, it’s so wonderful)
Ok, Kaiji sounds interesting and all but…extreme maths? MUST READ.
(As much as I love Gokusen, it was not the maths themed manga that I had been hoping it would be)
YOUR FEELINGS ARE MY FEELINGS
YOU HAVE SAID THEM SO WELL
I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE JUST ALTERNATELY RAGED INCOHERENTLY AND GUSHED ABOUT HOW WONDERFUL AND GOOD AND STRONG AND SMART AND BRAVE PM IS
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR SPARING ME THAT, I COULD MARRY YOU
THIS…
[Context: someone shipping PM/SS, saying “maybe…the rest of the Crew decides Slick need a new girlfriend. Matchmaking shenanigans ensue.”]
Not to derail the PM lovetrain (YAY PM), but the idea that Slick “needs” a new girlfriend also pings to me as the tendency to paint pairings like SS/BQ (in either universe) as the mean bitch girlfriend and poor put upon sweetie pie boyfriend.

Joss Whedon, every relationship doesn’t have to end in horrible tragedy.
I mean I get that not everyone likes the epilogue (personally I am neutral don’t care HARRYRONHERMIONELUNANEVILLEGINNY lived that all I care about and I just wanted everyone to be happy don’t care how) but
it is just so Whedon to complain the ending was too happy because RELATIONSHIPS ENDED IN HAPPY TOGETHERNESS INSTEAD OF DEATH AND DARKNESS.

I would like to know Joss’ opinion on the couplings in Avatar: The Last Airbender or in Fullmetal Alchemist, if he’s familiar with them. And when I say like, I really mean I don’t want to know.

Ha!
Does anyone know where I can find the sprites for the Alterniabound and other Troll walkabouts? I’m looking for Terezi (especially in her dragon costume!) and Nepeta in particular.
There’s a bunch of useful stuff at the Image Manipulation thread.
Anti-oppression discourse, nowadays, isn’t even about a politics (i.e. working collectively to change the world you inhabit) as much as it is about style—about speaking the right language, using the right terms, expressing outrage at the right moment, etc. Unlike previous generations of people discussing anti-oppression ideas, we who are members of this class don’t need to go to long, drawn-out meetings or to join activist groups in order to satisfy our desire to be against oppression. …. But I am trying to begin to understand how capitalism has enabled people—especially upwardly mobile, college educated people like me—to generate an anti-oppression discourse that allows many of us to feel as if we are doing much more to fight it than we actually are.”

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I’VE BEEN TRYING TO EXPRESS (bolding is mine)
ok, so. this presents some important ideas for sure. but (surprise surprise) i also have some problems with it. namely that it establishes a dichotomy of activists vs non-activists that i don’t think is as present as a lot of people say, and that dichotomy reinforces the incorrect assumption that online activists are perched on their ivory towers with no real connection to the oppressed people they are writing about. some do fit this description, absolutely. but i find a LOT of social justice critique rests on this idea that most of those involved are ultra-privileged, and it’s not true. at all.
…
basically i think what this states about activism is true for certain online and offline branches of activism, and i don’t think it’s more of a problem online than it is offline; i would argue it’s less so. professional activism is a real thing off of the internet, and it’s important to talk about who profits from that, who profits from the non-profit industrial complex, who profits from oppression not ending. and i also believe activism as commodity has been happening for a long time (look at adbusters and their campaigns as examples). there are numerous books out there about how rebellion, dissent and counterculture have been commodified, it’s nothing new. critique about jezebel in particular, i think, should not be expanded to include other activist websites, mainly because jezebel is hardly committed to anti-oppression politics, and in fact they reinforce harmful power dynamics on a pretty regular basis.
I’ve heavily cut both of these, check out the originals. This post is a somewhat off topic rant.
Anytime I see someone posturing about how much better offline activists are as people (this is quite different from arguing that they’re more effective, which in some contexts I think they are), I have to wonder if they’ve actually met any offline activists. Seriously, you think meaningless social justice posturing was invented on the internet? Which is not to say that it isn’t a problem, but it’s a problem everywhere.
I don’t see myself as an activist anyway, but I grew up around socialist activists and this post is reminding me why I took years to feel comfortable dipping my toes into activism before I got too sick for it. I’m not sure how much of my knee jerk reaction is because I’m Australian, since pretty much all activism here is viewed through a socialist lens(*). But I am so sick of middle class people so steeped in class privilege that they assume that everyone around them must be too (working class people being some distant ignorant downtrodden Other passively waiting to be saved), and I am really sick of the “wouldn’t our energies be better spent fighting capitalism?” response to any activist discussion that isn’t primarily about class. Which is not to say that we shouldn’t be working against the capitalist oligarchy, and a lot of online social justice discussions could do with more class consciousness, but dogmatically insisting that if you’re not directly fighting capitalism you’re not fighting injustice at all is just…argh.
(*)Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but does mean there’s a lot of smug middle class able bodied white guys who feel that the one and only way to fight any injustice is to “attack capitalism”.
I AM POSITIVELY DELIGHTED AT THE PROSPECT OF BEING FRIENDS WITH YOU FOREVER
I feel that the Of Adventure series is the kind of mutual trauma only suitable for palbonding really. Dear god, there were bits of Mountain which were positively Lovecraftian - do you…
I give you: Lovecraft/Tintin crossover covers.
(I haven’t read any of those books apart from a bunch of Enid Blyton. The idea of Enid Blyton + Homestuck is doing strange things to my childhood, though)
Squipy.: A Fungus the Size of a Small Airport
Now, this is somewhat difficult to wrap your head around, as we typically think of a living thing as being a single entity. But when you see mushrooms, you’re not seeing the whole organism. The fungus spreads underground, sending out roots that grow up into mushrooms here and there. Sc…
So cool!
Compiling all the information I have about Korra because I AM FLIPPING DICKS AND PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW.
[I’ve cut the images and links in case people don’t want spoilers, but it all sounds pretty cool!]
In response to the John <3 Karkat fight song for the HS-Shipping Olympics, I bring my own (god this is probably horriterrible) attempt for a Rose <3 Kanaya fight song.
Snark, sarcasm, and grimdark, our darlings!
Press on with the brave Virgo!
Pale moirails never,
Matesprits forever,
Onward to flushed hearts, tally ho!
Snark, sarcasm, and grimdark, our darlings!
Rainbow drinker, take hold of your beloved’s hands!
To death, the Green Sun, and back,
With horseshit never to lack!
Team Rose <3 Kanaya, the greatest of bands!OKAY THAT’S PRETTY GOOD. You could quaff to this song, it feels shantyish.
I guess our next step is for us all to gather in a stadium at 8 PM, a little drunk, and see who can outsing the other. And while we all do that, Team Vriska<3John and Team Dave<3Terezi will probably steal all our stuff.
Singing and/or theft is definitely the best way to settle ship disputes. As long as Jade/Feferi isn’t in charge of the rare pairing song, that could end badly.
I once wrote a giant essay on why Thane is the actualfax worst, but then I neuroses’d out and never posted it. GOD WHERE TO EVEN BEGIN.
Actually let’s talk about the time I romanced Thane and IT WAS. THE MOST. FRUSTRATING THING. I’VE EVER DONE. And I feel like everything that is wrong with Thane can be expressed in a summary of this experience as follows:
Thane: Oh, hello, I am an ASSASSIN but I am also ~super deep and religious~ watch as I GRACEFULLY MURDER THIS LADY while whispering something prayer-like and then ARTFULLY ARRANGE her corpse in a holy i guess position or whatever. DO YOU ENJOY MY BATMAN VOICE?
Shep: …oh lord.
Ahahaha.
I was just reading thejennifuhrer’s post about how people give her grief for ZOMG shipping the WRONG PAIRING and feeling all righteously indignant on her behalf (because she is awesome and doesn’t deserve that crap) And then I thought “Still, even if I don’t leave nasty messages I do sometimes feel irrationally grumpy when people ship differently to me.”
So I’d just like to say: I spent most of Mass Effect 2 swooning over Thane like the sad fangirl I am, and I have to admit… that you are absolutely right. Oh Thane, you weird ridiculous angsty ex assassin lizard man you.
(I think if I’d have been playing a typical paragon I might have an emotional reaction more like yours, but my f!Shep was as emotionally reserved, ambivalent about killing people, and suicidally depressed as he was so they suited each other. It was still kind of creepy, but the more I think about my shipping preferences the more I realise I like creepy)
I’ve cut the text in case it upsets people but the post I’m reblogging has a good summary of the situation in case the original links get taken down etc.

So first off: People should know about this. I hope someone has called the police, but these sorts of things are hard to prosecute and fandom can be pretty terrible with letting bastards like this hang around even after they’ve been discovered.
Looking through the comments I’m seeing the same crap that happened in local con based fandom(*), with people saying that since he’s said he’s sorry we should just forgive him and stop making such a big deal. But the first priority should be supporting the people he’s already hurt and stopping this happening again.
I think older fans have a responsibility to look out for younger fans and create an environment where they feel safe expressing themselves without being taken advantage of, and maybe we could do more to prevent this sort of thing, I don’t know. Anyway, keep safe you guys :/ Here’s some American Hotlines for Abuse, and if you’re in other countries I’m sure there’s stuff too.
(*)Because this is not just a Tumblr thing, or a Homestuck thing, though I think being an internet based fandom covering a wide range of ages doesn’t help.

me and fin are gonna have a fun day at the shops in heels to practice walking in them.
TRAINING HEELS!!!
I’ve pretty much given up, I have trouble enough not falling over in flats. Cam has this trick for making me fall over without touching by just moving the right way that he’s not allowed to teach other people any more.
tee hee! same here. as a short person, i often get reassurance from others who tell me that i ‘must be grounded’…
how have i not heard of this trick let alone learnt and practised it?

*Belatedly considers the unwiseness of putting such information into the hands of a younger sibling*
THERE IS NO TRICK. FORGET I SAID ANYTHING.
