In response to feminist tumblrs who circulated this article, an article which re-emphasized that women in the Global South (or ethnically minoritized women) are the most oppressed (read: victims of their backward cultures) and that women in the Global North (Japan as an exception) live in the…

Dear people on my tumblr,
Please consider adding descriptions to your images and videos. I understand not wanting to have to create full transcripts of videos or long comics, but if there’s only a sentence or two of prose or an easy to describe image then it’s not too hard to make your post more…Hmmm. This is an interesting point, but my tumblr is, pretty much by design, a visual experience; it would have pretty much zero value to someone who can’t see. I mean, it might be nice to know that I’m reblogging YET ANOTHER picture of Ling Yao to someone keeping track of my tragic obsession, but it’s not like icons on my dreamwidth, where they accompany mostly text-based posts — the image is what you’re here for.
I’m gonna have to think about this one! I am for accessibility in general. Am I just being balky?
Gotta remember to start alt-texting images on my journal though.
HMM. So, I can’t say for certain that you adding descriptions to straight images would benefit anyone reading your tumblr, apart from indirectly by generally encouraging a culture of accessibility by example. But, for example, looking at your last couple of posts I see quite a few where adding text transcripts would help anyone who has trouble with handwriting or black-on-white text etc, which are common problems even amongst people who are otherwise ok with pictures.
In general my experience with accessibility is that it’s always worth asking “Could I (easily) make this more accessible to more people?”, and that any given accessibility issue always affects more people than you’d expect. But being fairly new to tumblr and not having any serious vision problems myself I don’t have much of a feel for whether there’s many vision impaired people here and how they use the site, and it’s possible that at some point one will come along and point out that my POV is All Wrong.
Dear people on my tumblr,
Please consider adding descriptions to your images and videos. I understand not wanting to have to create full transcripts of videos or long comics, but if there’s only a sentence or two of prose or an easy to describe image then it’s not too hard to make your post more accessible to those who cannot see images or have trouble reading small print/English/etc text and so on.
You would also make my life easier, since I don’t like to post images or videos without descriptions and end up having to do most of them myself. Once one person has done it it makes it easier for everyone who reblogs from there!
I totally understand that sometimes it’s just too much effort to do anything but click “reblog”, but please consider it for when you do have the time and energy.
All my best and thanks for all the awesome posts,
